Family Activities
Ideas and suggestions of what to do with little ones when out and about in Hobart and surrounding areas. From one hour to whole day adventures.
One Hour.
A quick trip out from Old Bishop’s Quarters to run off extra energy or to have that last quick fix of playgrounds before bedtime?!
You can visit Fitzroy Gardens or Parliament St playground on foot. Alternatively a short drive Lower Sandy Bay playground (BBQ facilities are available + Nutgrove beach). Or over to West Hobart Train Park.
Two Hours.
Walking to Molle St from your accommodation to the beginning of South Hobart Rivulet track - the track takes you all the way to Cascade Brewery - you can opt out turning home at any time. Cascade Gardens playground is beautifully shaded on a hot day. Stop off at Hamlet Cafe for a treat at the beginning or end of your walk at Molle St. Or end your walk at Cascade Brewery for lunch in their gardens.
Half Day.
A drive up north towards New Norfolk winds along the River Derwent - spectacular colours in Autumn. The Salmon Ponds provides entertainment for the whole family; a wander around the ponds, feeding the fish. Perhaps finding a platypus in the creek nearby?! Learning some fly-fishing history from the museum buildings. And then lunch, a BYO picnic on the lawns or enjoy lunch served to you in the cafe - great kids menu!
Whole Day.
A bit more of a drive but well worth it. Stop off at Tasmanian Devil Unzoo on the way to Port Arthur Historic Site. Spend the day at Port Arthur - take a picnic or enjoy a late lunch or afternoon tea at the Port Arthur Lavender Farm.
Alternatively head south and discover the Tahune Air Walk along with a swim and walk at Hastings Caves Thermal Pool.
